Each participant in the basic functional literacy program must be able to complete a post-test demonstrating that they have achieved a specific level of basic writing, reading and math skill. If they are then interested in continuing and focusing on certain areas of learning, they are assisted in doing so. If they are interested in pursuing a GED, they are referred to GED Programs.
LONG TERM GOALS

MATH SKILLS
  • to recognize monetary denominations
  • to know the value of each currency
  • to add or subtract money
  • to demonstrate a purchase
  • to anticipate correct change
  • to budget appropriately
READING & WRITING SKILLS
  • to read directions on medication labels
  • to read cooking instructions on food packaging
  • to read appliance manuals
  • to complete applications & forms
  • to read & address mail
  • to write checks
Results of a member survey revealed that 56% of members have completed 12th grade, 9% completed their GED, and 35% did not graduate.

Early onset of symptoms has resulted in many individuals with mental illness not mastering the basic reading, writing and math skills which are necessary to function in society.
